Wednesday afternoon, the Blue Devils became the next corps to announce their 2022 production title - 'Tempus Blue.' Along with their show graphic and a list of their 2022 repertoire, a short teaser trailer was also released to the public:

The teaser opens with the Blue Devils guard performing over a reading of the W.B. Yeats poem called Aedh Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven. The caption for the teaser explains a bit about the significance of the color blue, while the teaser shows performers dancing with blue pieces of fabric in blue lighting, interspersed with visuals of famous pieces of art that feature blue subjects:

"It may seem surprising, but the color blue is a relatively modern invention. The only ancient culture that had a word for it was the Ancient Egyptians, and yet the color BLUE has flourished in a multitude of incarnations reaching far beyond the discovery of Lapis Lazuli... A universal perspective provides a musical palette of influence and style. A contemporary, modern approach allows TEMPUS BLUE to reflect this emotional, miraculous hue with innovation and vision."

Musical selections for BD's 65th anniversary show include:

  • Lapis Lazuli by Dave Glyde (original composition)
  • Divine Blue by Dave Glyde (original composition)
  • Carnival of Venice (Titian) by Niccolo Paganini
  • Moon River (Blue Flower) by Henry Mancini, arranged by Jacob Collier
  • Hands and Feet (Picasso) by Michel Camilo
  • Silk Sonic Intro (Yves Klein) by Bruno Mars
  • Tank! (Yves Klein) by Yoko Kanno
  • Home of the Brave (Blue Earth) by Thomas Bergersen

Fans, rightfully so, are extremely excited about the music BD will be playing this year. With a mix of original compositions, modern music, and classic composers, audiences should expect to be thoroughly entertained if they're lucky enough to see a Blue Devils performance live.

With less than a month until their first public performance at Drum Corps at the Rose Bowl, we won't have to wait long to see Devs step back on the field. Something tells me that between the 50th anniversary of DCI, the 65th anniversary of the Blue Devils organization, and the corps' first time performing on the field since 2019, it's going to be an incredibly special season-opening performance.
