SCV Adds VanDorens And More To 2020 Brass Staff

VanDoren is one of the most well-known names when it comes to incredible brass performance in DCI — and SCV just added three of them to their team.

Donnie VanDoren is best known for his work with The Cadets, Troopers and then his time spent with Star of Indiana and eventually, "Blast!" He has continued to work in the marching activity since, including consulting with Bluecoats, Carolina Crown, The Cadets, and he still holds a role as the casting director of the current iteration of "Blast!" Donnie will be consulting with the Vanguard while son Evan and daughter-in-law Katie VanDoren supplement the design and instructional staff with their expertise.

Evan VanDoren joins the staff as the new arranger for the Santa Clara Vanguard. Evan boasts a long list of success writing music for bands in Texas and beyond, including a number of BOA Grand National Championship finals visits with Cedar Park High School. Evan marched a number of years at Carolina Crown and continued to teach in the activity immediately after. After a while with Blue Stars and Madison Scouts, Evan made his way back to Crown where he learned under Matt Harloff and Michael Klesch.

Katie VanDoren is the new assistant brass caption head for Vanguard after teaching CrownBRASS since 2013 and marching in the corps from 2008-2012. Her current experience involves six years teaching the Vandegrift bands as an Associate Director, and she helped continue and built onto its reputation as one of the top premier band programs in the state of Texas.

The three of them will be starting alongside a fully outfitted staff that will add on to seven of SCV's pre-existing brass staff. The new additions: Ben Gunnarson, Danny Brock, Jordan Webb, Sarah Jones, Dexx Moore, Lauren Casey-Clyde, and Gordon Janda.

For a corps that already had a strong brass section, it will be very interesting to see how the VanDorens and others will add onto what Vanguard has already been doing to make strides in this department.
