DCI Releases 2019 Tour Schedule With Exciting Changes

Drum Corps International released their schedule for the 2019 DCI Summer Tour this morning, just days after the door swings closed on a fantastic season of high school marching band in Bands of America. The last spectators are still leaving Lucas Oil Stadium as we speak—pretty sure the security guards are STILL asking for the last Carmel parents to stop taking pictures.

Anyway, back to drum corps. Some of the most important things to note in 2019 are: the tour will premiere in Detroit again, no St. Louis dome show, and Open Class championships are moving.

Other than that, the big shows of the season are pretty similar to recent years. Some highlights include Stanford, Minneapolis, Orlando, San Antonio, Allentown, and of course DCI's return to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for year two.

Unfortunately, the summer tour will not be returning back to St. Louis for a show in the Dome At America's Center due to a scheduling conflict.

The announcement explains a temporary solution to the conflict, "A new event in Belleville, Illinois on July 14 will provide a great venue to fans in the St. Louis region. An additional July 13 stop in Memphis will also create another new performance opportunity for drum corps in the Home of the Blues as the DCI Tour makes its way south in the second half of the month."

Perhaps the biggest change that we saw from the announcement is the change in venue for the end-of-season Open Class festivities. All of Open Class Championships will be moved to the very-newly built Indiana Wesleyan University's Wildcat Stadium in Marion, IN.

The school has served as a reliable housing site for multiple corps over the last decade and features plenty of space for parking, outdoor warm-ups, and even an indoor fieldhouse.

Having spent 7 years competing in A-Class myself, I understand the amount of work members are putting in, often not even to make it past the preliminary round in Dayton.

First and foremost, I want to bring attention to the Palm Desert school district winter guards, all three of them. I don’t know what they’re putting in the water in the Coachella Valley, but these kids are ridiculously good. I’ve been involved in this activity since 1986 (I started spinning when I was 4-years-old, here in the Northeast), and I’ve seen a lot of very good, very young guards (St. Ann’s in the mid-1990s, I’m looking at you). That said, I couldn’t be more impressed with these programs.

The 2019 WGI Dallas Regional featured a lot of tough competition in Scholastic A and Open class. With 32 SA entries in prelims, only 15 were able to move on to finals. Of the 8 SO groups in Prelims, only 6 moved on to Finals.
