After five Texas regionals, a few cancellations, and enough rain to fill an ocean, the end of the road is upon us. The 2018 BOA season for nearly all Texas bands comes to the ultimate conclusion in San Antonio this weekend.

With 84 bands on the schedule for the two days of preliminary competition, if you can't get enough marching band this weekend, I'm afraid you'll never be satisfied—until next weekend when of course you can watch 108 bands perform in BOA Grand National Championships!

Starting at 8 AM CT on Friday, November 2, Hutto will take the field to begin the madness under the roof in the Alamodome. Prelims will continue with short breaks throughout the day until Keller takes the field at 9:30 PM CT. You better get right to bed though, because prelims continue at the crack of dawn on Saturday with New Braunfels at 7 AM CT.

Tune in before preliminary awards to catch the Texas A&M-Commerce University marching band in exhibition, starting at 3:30 PM CT. Then stick around to find out which 14 bands will continue on into the evening's Super Regional Finals.

Last Chance For 'Lone Star State'

You may have noticed that only one band will be heading up to Indianapolis for the 2018 BOA Grand National Championships—Prosper High School. If you know anything about Texas band, you know that UIL rules everything, and this year happens to be the 6A bands' turn at making a UIL State Contest finals appearance.

6A schools make up some of the most competitive marching bands in the state, including Claudia Taylor Johnson, Flower Mound, Ronald Reagan, Vandegrift, The Woodlands, and Marcus. In fact, many of the schools competing in this weekend's BOA Super Regional on Friday and Saturday will have to stay in the Alamodome to compete once again in 6A prelims on Monday, and the top 12 will compete another time on Tuesday!

Up In The Air

Due to cancellations, rain delays, the simple fact that we haven't seen these groups in a few weeks; who knows where the scores and placements will end up for 2018. This season, only three Texas BOA regionals actually finished their finals with awards and all.

The Dallas/Ft. Worth regional was cancelled as the first finalist band went on to perform and the stadium was quickly overtaken by intense thunderstorms. The Waco regional wasn't looking good all week, and by the time it came to be, the lunch break marked the end of the competition as rain inundated the stadium for the remainder of the day.

Three bands have pulled in BOA Regional wins and one has ended prelims in first:

  • Claudia Taylor Johnson (9/22, BOA South Texas)
  • Timber Creek (9/22, BOA West Texas)
  • Claudia Taylor Johnson (9/29, BOA Austin)
  • Ronald Reagan (10/06, BOA Houston)
  • Flower Mound (10/06, BOA Dallas/Ft. Worth)*

These will be groups to watch as not only as potential finalists but some may be in our top three finishes. Hebron and Vandegrift will also be looking for a top spot after taking first and second over CTJ in San Antonio Super Regional prelims in 2017.
