Where Has Every DCI Championship Been Held?

Since 2009, the DCI World Championships have been hosted inside the beautiful confines of Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis. And again in 2019, the ending of the summer tour will find its way to Indiana's state capital.

Did you know the DCI World Championships were once held in Jackson, Mississippi; Miami, Florida; and even in Canada?

The first DCI Championship took place in a little town called Whitewater, Wisconsin. Situated between Madison and Milwaukee, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater played host to the first two DCI World Championships.

In 1972, the Anaheim Kingsmen won the inaugural championship with a score of 88.100. The following summer, the Santa Clara Vanguard claimed their first world title in Whitewater with a score of 88.650.

Over the next 40-plus years, DCI Championships have moved all over the country. In all, 19 different cities have played host.

Indianapolis has the longest history as a host, with 10 championships under its belt, and Madison, WI comes in second with seven.

Seven cities have hosted the DCI championships only once.

  • Atlanta (1984)
  • College Park, MD (2000)
  • Dallas (1991)
  • Ithaca, NY (1974)
  • Jackson, MS (1993)
  • Miami (1983)
  • Pasadena, CA (2007)

Aside from the current run in Indianapolis, the highest number of consecutive times a city has hosted the DCI Championships is three. From 1985-1987, Madison, WI hosted the championships. Then from 1996-1998, the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL, hosted DCI.

Twice the DCI World Championship has been determined in Canada. The Santa Clara Vanguard (1981) and Blue Devils ('82) won championships while in Montreal.

Prelims featured 36 corps and after 13 hours of performances, the numbers were narrowed to 25. A select few Open Class corps moved on with the entire contingent of DCI's World Class corps to perform in Friday's World Championship Semifinals. Seattle Cascades were the last corps in, while Louisiana Stars just barely missed the cut-off, ending what was a fantastic season for the 7-year old drum corps.
