All Access: Claudia Taylor Johnson

In FloMarching's first full-length feature, we follow one of the most energetic, youthful, and exciting programs in the country: Claudia Taylor Johnson.

Get an up-close and personal look at the San Antonio band that has taken the marching arts by storm. Known throughout the marching community as CTJ, Claudia Taylor has risen to the top in one of the most competitive areas in the country. CTJ competes weekly with fellow Central Texas bands Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan, Vandegrift, Cedar Park, and Leander to name a few. Born in and around amazing programs, the only way CTJ could rise through the ranks was to carve a name for itself and create its own style.

On The Road: Avon Comes To Texas

When band directors sign up their programs for BOA contests, distance, time, and student experience are some of the most influential reasons for selecting which shows they want to attend. Cross-country trips are typically reserved for bands making their way to Grand Nationals in Indianapolis. For the Avon Marching Black and Gold, however, Lucas Oil Stadium is only about 30 minutes away from their hometown in Indiana. BOA Grand Nationals are essentially a home show for them, which puts them in a unique position. Should they stay on their home turf, where they've succeeded in past years? Or should they hit the road?

In the fall of 2017, Avon director of bands Jay Webb made a radical decision: He decided to take his students on an epic trip to a regional with a reputation—over 1,100 miles to BOA's San Antonio Super Regional, the "Grand Nats of the South." See Avon compete in the ranks of the Southern theater of marching arts and get a taste for Texas, alongside the teaching talents of Webb and Matt Harloff.
