Don't Miss These 9 Bands At BOA Northeast Ohio

FloMarching BOA Sign

Fourteen bands from across the Midwest and Northeast are taking over Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio, for the 2017 Bands of America Northeast Ohio Regional on Saturday, Sept. 16.

The Northeast Ohio Regional is one of two shows streaming LIVE on FloMarching to kick off the first weekend of Bands of America competition. The Powder Springs Regional in Powder Springs, GA, also takes place on Saturday.

In Canton, nine bands are making the trip to perform in their only Bands of America competition for the 2017 season. Also performing in circuits like Mid-States Band Association (MSBA), Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA), Pennsylvania Interscholastic Marching Band Association (PIMBA)(and more), these bands often approach the Bands of America events like a "championship-level" competition.

Having a "championship" at the beginning of the season can be a two-pronged challenge for these high school students and staff. One on hand, the band must push itself to reach a higher standard right from the start. On the other hand, getting a "big" show out of the way early on can often shake out the nerves associated with performing for the first time for the season.

One important note: all 14 bands performing in prelims on Saturday, Sept. 16, in Canton will make it into finals (rather than the usual 10 at BOA Regionals). The students will get a chance to perform under the lights, and this gives them two opportunities to shake out the "first-show jitters."

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports USATSI_9642302.jpg

With a limited amount of Bands of America competitions in the western half of the United States -- many bands in California, Utah and Nevada must make their way to Utah to strut their stuff under the lights at the BOA Utah Regional Championship. This year, 27 bands will converge in St. George. With less than half of last year's Regional Finalists returning, the door has been left open for bands that are new to Utah to make their break into the finals arena.
