It doesn't take a health expert to recognize that drum corps is a sport that requires its participants to exert, or "burn," thousands of calories on a daily basis. At the end of season, drum corps performers will return to normal life pounds lighter, several shades darker, and with a general boost in self-confidence and body image.
Athletes in drum corps have to be fueled properly in order to reach their peak physical performance. Here are some food ideas that will help you're body through rehearsal and show day.

1. Eggs
Generally seen at breakfast, eggs can prime the body for a long day of physical work. One egg yields roughly 7 grams of protein. Egg yolks are a primary source of vitamin A, which contributes heavily to eyesight and the eye's ability to adjust in changes to light -- very beneficial for sun exposure.
2. Colorful Salads
When it comes to packing a nutrient-dense punch, a salad is hard to beat. Although low in calories, a salad's vitamins and minerals are essential for overall health during a physically demanding summer. Darker colored greens such as spinach hold more vitamins [K, A, E, B2, B6], while lighter greens such as iceberg lettuce replenish valuable water to the body. Additional vegetables such as cucumbers, celery, and tomatoes will add texture and variety. Sunflower seeds or almond slivers can add crunch, creating a salad that's pleasing to the eye, brain, AND body.
3. Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches
A staple food in drum corps, this delicious and portable match made in heaven serves up three key macronutrients. Peanut butter holds 8 grams of protein. In combination with being a healthy unsaturated fat, this tasty favorite converts to extensive, steady energy for the body. Bread is a carbohydrate that will provide a boost of immediate energy, perfect for before an ensemble block or run-through. The natural sugar from jellies and bread is beneficial, if not essential, to the average drum corps athlete. Natural fruit sugar helps combat sun exposure, fluid loss, and provides for a quick energy boost.
4. Watermelon
Standing at 92 percent water content and only 6 percent fruit sugar, nothing can beat this refreshing drum corps superfood. Not only does it taste great on a hot summer day but also helps to keep the corps hydrated and happy with its massive amounts of water.
5. Pasta
Drum corps athletes need to fuel their bodies with food to keep them going from long, sunny rehearsals to bus rides to late performances. Pasta paired with a protein and vegetable can be a balanced and nutritious meal, not to mention tasty and satisfying on the comfort food scale. For maximum performance benefits, complex carbs should be consumed prior to intense physical activity, rather than after. Spaghetti and meatballs for lunch before ensemble is an ideal meal, because the body will breakdown and digest the carbohydrates for the remainder of the day.
6. Bananas
A pure carbohydrate, bananas are easy on the stomach and provide fast, readily available energy. Whether enjoyed by itself or paired with peanut butter and bread, this basic fruit is loaded with potassium and fiber to keep the brain and muscles happy.
7. Gatorade
After being in the sun for umpteen hours and sweating profusely, a sports-replenishing drink not only tastes good but also has physical benefits for the drum corps athlete. Valuable sugars, electrolytes, and sodium can be replenished, while sugar can give a much-needed mid-day boost. Gatorade and sports drinks are NOT a replacement for water but rather an aide that can assist in recovery from intense physical activity or sun exposure.
8. Beans and Legumes
Shoutout to the vegan and vegetarian drum corps performers! Beans and other legumes are filled with fiber and can help athletes stay full for longer. These protein-packed babies can be thrown into chili, salads, or as a side dish.
