For the first time in its 113-year history, the University of Oklahoma's marching band, the Pride of Oklahoma, has selected a woman to be its drum major. The band announced this week that sophomore Julie Siberts will hold the position for the fall 2017 season.

"The Pride of Oklahoma has a long-standing history of outstanding drum majors," OU band director Brian Britt wrote on Facebook. "We are fortunate to have this exceptional rising junior continuing this tradition of exemplary student leadership next season."

A music education major, Siberts will be entering her third year with the band after having served as a trumpet section leader in 2016.

The drum major role for OU's band is marked by one of the most recognizable traditions in college marching. In 1971, Gene "Coach" Thrailkill led the Pride of Oklahoma through a advancement period for the band. One of the new traditions that Thrailkill installed was the famous strutting step the OU drum majors must be able to perform while leading the band onto the field.
