BOA Loses Longtime Volunteer Tommy Smith
Bands of America longtime volunteer Tommy Smith dies unexpectedly on Thursday, Dec 1.
Tommy Smith, the beloved front ensemble coordinator/gatekeeper for Bands of America, unexpectedly died on Thursday, Dec. 1.
In an announcement posted on its Facebook page, Bands of America said, "We are heartbroken and will miss his inspiring presence and spirit. Please keep the Smith family, friends, and loved ones in your thoughts. We'll miss you terribly, friend."

I met Tommy at the Bands of America McAllen Regional in September 2016. Right from our first handshake, the man was nothing but gracious and kind. He was very easy to talk with and quick to make a joke, and Tommy's love for the marching arts was immediately apparent. He stood on the track in McAllen, Texas, from seven in the morning until almost midnight, most of which was in 100-plus degree heat. He never lost his smile and at the end of it all was still more than happy to let me interview him.
Every single band that competed at a contest Tommy was volunteering at would receive his customary speech. Just before the front ensemble performers and band parents would take the field, Tommy would huddle them all together and explain to them why they were there. Tommy would remind them to enjoy every performance, relax, and have fun. While his physical presence was intimidating, his calming father-like demeanor was always able to relax the most anxious performers.
