Crazy Close Calls For Finalists In A Class

It was a tight race between groups in the Scholastic A class at Atlanta this year. The top three groups came out of finals with scores so close it’ll make your head spin if you look to closely to the recap. Ninety Six HS from South Carolina took home the bronze with a score of 85.425, followed closely by Hardin Valley HS with 85.825 and Doorman HS, which won the gold with a score of 85.975.

However, definitely have to throw a shoutout to Hardin Valley HS which increased their score by 1.5 points between prelims and finals and moved from 3rd in prelims to 2nd in finals.

Milton HS took the gold for Scholastic World with their steampunk-themed production. Complete with members marching across the floor with robotic stiffness and playing with mechanical precision, Milton’s finals score of 84.05 put them ahead of North Gwinnett HS by a very solid 2.2 points.

Audio Theater Raises The Stakes

There were some major shake-ups and memorable moments with the Independent class groups in Atlanta over the weekend as well.

While being the only participant in Independent A, Point Indoor Percussion seemingly cleaned things up by increasing their score from 72.4 point in prelims to 75.95 in finals. Their show revolves around reminiscing about loved ones lost. It contained an incredibly heartfelt moment, where the front plays “See You Again” and slowly fades away while a member takes a beautiful singing solo that was quite touching to watch.

Independent Open was full of surprises and delightful twists at this year’s Atlanta show. FIU Indoor performed their Spanish-themed production which involved cajons, trumpet solos, and bullfights! FIU’s "caliente" performance earned them a score of 80.7 in second, behind Civitas Independent which scored 83.15 and went back to their hometown of Rock Hill, SC with this year’s WGI Atlanta Regional gold medal.

Atlanta Quest took home the gold at their home show with a score of 84.8, up 1.95 points from prelims.

Equinox Percussion performed a show with such tunes as “Paint It Black” by the Rolling Stones, and tunes from the jazz-fusion group Snarky Puppy and received the silver medal in Independent World prelims, then the bronze in finals with a score of 79.2.

That move from second to third on Saturday evening was facilitated by Nashville's Audio Theater. They started the day with a score of 87.75, earning them first place in PIO, the class in which they entered the competition. However, they were bumped up into Independent World class before finals and quickly were thrust into some of the best PIW percussion ensembles that WGI has to offer. This is a show you'll want to see in Dayton this April.
