There’s just about a month left in the 2019 season and during the WGI Indianapolis Regional, groups from all across the Midwest came together to test out their chops against one another.

There were ups, there were downs, and a few pleasant surprises along the way.

Things Get Shaken Up In Scholastic A

The competition this previous weekend in Scholastic A was fierce, to say the least. Hamilton Southeastern came out on top in Scholastic A class with a score of 85.725, up nearly 4 points from prelims the day before with their show "Birds Of A Feather." That was all after McGavock was moved up from PSA to PSO between prelims and finals.

Meanwhile, Greenwood HS took home the bronze with its production "V Is For Villain," which earned them a score of 80.525 in prelims and an 83.275 after their finals run.

Lawrence Township took home the gold in Scholastic Open with a finals score of 81.4 with their beautifully dark show, entitled “I Was Perfect.” The group’s theme of perfectionism leading to our eventual downfall was highlighted by a live cello player in the front ensemble playing excerpts from the theme of HBO’s television drama "Succession."

Easily the biggest shake-up of the weekend goes to McGavock HS and their show “Two of Hearts.” McGavock started the weekend by taking first place with a score of 84.4 in Scholastic A. However their performance was so good that they were bumped from A into Open class by WGI's steering committee.

And things didn’t stop there; McGavock ended up taking second place in Scholastic Open with a score of 80.550, just 0.85 behind first place Lawrence Township. Not a bad score for getting bumped up a class, mid-regional.

Concert Groups Offer Different Pace, Same Excellence Expected of WGI Indy

With less emphasis on marching and visual show design, groups in Scholastic Concert gave fans a pleasant change of pace in the middle of the day.

In Open class, Goshen HS helped calm and put audiences at ease with their show entitled “Rain” (80.4) while Plainfield took home the gold with a very high score of 88.5 for their production "Bamboo Grove Spiritual," a show with motifs set in the Far East with music inspired by traditional Japanese melodies.

While Goshen brought peace and Plainfield took to the shores of Japan, in Scholastic A class Penn-Trafford HS took the audience to space with their sci-fi inspired production.

The show, complete with ethereal themes in the music, earned Penn-Trafford a finals score of 85.9, up 3.7 points from their prelims performance. The show’s mood was helped by background props with scenes of space on them, and even included a live theremin which truly gave the feeling of travelling to another galaxy!

World Class Groups Start The Push To April

The final few weeks of the WGI season for many groups, especially those in Scholastic World and Independent classes, include lots of refining and fine-tuning of their productions in preparation for the big show in Dayton.

Avon walked away with the gold and a finals score of 84.4 with their show “Enough.” Complete with a grand piano and the iconic “Clair de Lune” and extra tenor drums placed on rolling platforms, "Enough" already has most of the pieces put together that make an incredible Scholastic World class program.

Not to be outdone at their own home show, Franklin Central HS earned the silver medal for their production “About Nothing,” a show that plays with the concept of television shows and incorporates excerpts of the popular theme from the show Seinfeld. Their entertaining show earned them a finals score of 82.875, giving them the lead over third-place Broken Arrow by a slim margin of just 0.025.

Fans of Independent World class hoping to hear some clean beats and be entertained were definitely not disappointed after this weekend's regional.

Veritas took the wow-factor and cranked it up with their show “Monster.” The classic horror movie inspired performance brought fans to their feet at both prelims and finals, a difficult feat at this point in the season. Including bass drums performing solos on rolling gurneys, Veritas' 2019 show will be a crowd favorite in Dayton this April.

Matrix made their 2019 WGI debut this weekend on FloMarching with a show about bringing movies to life on the floor... or is it? Check out our interview with one of the minds behind Matrix's success, Rob Ferguson, after their prelims run.

Taking home the gold medal for PIW was Rhythm X with their show entitled “Alinea.” A show filled to the brim with energy and sleight of hand, it’s looking to be another one of those season for X.

The power brought by the battery, precise playing of the front ensemble, and creative design of the production earned X a finals score of 87.2.  It will be interesting to see what Rhythm X and all other groups across the country bring to the table as we begin the countdown to the big show in April!
