The 18-time world champion Concord Blue Devils have finally released information for their 2018 program, "Dreams and Nighthawks."

Along with a video, the corps released some notes on its website describing the inspiration behind the concept as well as the source music.

Just before the midway point of the video, program coordinator and choreographer Scott Chandler asks in a voiceover: "Nighthawks, who are they? How did they get there? Did they know each other? They all reached that final moment in the diner to discover why they were all there at exactly the same time."

The inspiration lies entirely in a painting done by Edward Hopper, called "Nighthawks." The instantly recognizable painting depicts four people sitting in a diner at night.

One of the most interesting things about "Nighthawks" is pop culture's attempt to discern meanings from the most minute details of the painting. Poets, other artists, and authors have gone to great lengths to give the three characters sitting at the counter (and the one working behind it) a narrative. This year is the Blue Devils' turn.

"In a whirlwind of puzzle pieces, a cast of characters assembles a plot line of timeless speculation," the corps stated in its official announcement. "A conversation of where, when, and why unfolds to a contemporary, eclectic soundtrack from John Adams to Carole King to Simon Dobson."

Music selections include:

  • John Adams
  • Simon Dobson
  • Paul Lovatt-Cooper
  • James Newton Howard
  • Dave Glyde
  • Carole King
  • David Raskin
  • Earle Hagen
