Western Bands Converge On Utah For 2017 Debut
With a limited amount of Bands of America competitions in the western half of the United States -- many bands in California, Utah and Nevada must make their way to Utah to strut their stuff under the lights at the BOA Utah Regional Championship. This year, 27 bands will converge in St. George. With less than half of last year's Regional Finalists returning, the door has been left open for bands that are new to Utah to make their break into the finals arena.

Let's take a look at some of the bands making their 2017 BOA debut this weekend.

2:15 PM MT - Foothill H.S., NV

Coming all the way from Henderson, NV, Foothill is one of those bands from the West that people have come to recognize. After last year's third place finish at the BOA Utah Regional, Foothill will certainly be looking to capitalize and launch themselves into a silver medal or higher this weekend. The band also has 12 BOA Regional Finalist titles in their past and 6 WGI Percussion World Championship Finals appearances.

Their show this year, entitled "Beautiful", will use the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, most notably his pieces "Symphonic Dances", "Adagio from Symphony No. 2", and "Finale from Piano Concerto No. 2".

3:15 PM MT - American Fork H.S., UT

Returning to St. George in 2017 is the 2016 BOA Utah Regional Champion, American Fork H.S. from American Fork, UT. In this band's storied history, they have captured a top-2 spot at the BOA Western Regional since 2007 and have finished in first place 8 times.

American Fork will be performing their 2017 production, "Dimensionality." Their show uses the music of Hans Zimmer, "Discombobulate", Edward Elgar in "Nimrod" from "Enigma Variations", Frank Ticheli's "Angels in the Architecture", and finally "Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine" by Eric Whitacre.

4:30 PM MT - Westlake H.S., UT

Another BOA veteran, Westlake, will take the field towards the end of the prelims portion of Saturday's show. As one of the returning finalists from 2016, Westlake will be looking to beat their spot from last season, placing their goal to beat 5th place. Last year in their visit to the Bands of America Grand National Championships in Indianapolis, Westlake took home a 75.80, putting them in 29th when considering just the first day of prelims.

Their show this year is titled "Making A Difference" and uses musical selections by Leonard Cohen and David Holsinger.
