For some time now, the Cadets have been known to make some bold moves in regard to show design. When the Cadets recently announced they were holding auditions for vocalists for their 2018 production, it seemed like a fairly normal tryout notice. However, it's the number of vocalists they might be looking for this year that is making waves.

A drawing on a napkin has been circulating throughout the marching community showing some very interesting details regarding the Cadets' auditions. It appears that they will be using 150 vocalists!

Knowing that changes are certain to come, the idea of fielding 150 vocalists instead of having a more traditional ensemble arrangement would be one of the wildest ideas in DCI history.

Even if we do see 150 mics and basically a show choir-style production next year, will that get the Cadets back to the mountaintop?

Nobody will ever say that Hopkins and his design team aren't pushing the limits of the activity. But the real question is whether they actually abandon the power and musical capabilities of horns and percussion. One thing they are not doing away with is the color guard aspect.

Every person who is auditioning is also being asked bring a flag and rifle to spin for the first camp. So how will spinning and singing work out together?

With new advancements in wireless mic-ing and in-ear monitors, the idea of hooking every member up so that they could sing, spin, and march at the same time isn't out of the realm of possibilities.

So, what will happen in 2018 for the Cadets? A massive show choir with flags and rifles? Or will they slim down this idea back into the normal realm of drum corps. We all shall see.

Stay tuned next Friday for news on the corps who will be moving members around the field with drones instead of marching and the pit that will be playing only the floor mat pianos.
