Austin Regional Sets Benchmark For BOA 2017 In Texas

It's only week two in the Bands of America season, but many of the top programs in Texas are looking for benchmark performances at the BOA Austin Regional on Saturday.

The Austin Regional is one of the most highly anticipated contests of the year and will set the stage for other in-state competitions such as the Houston Regional and San Antonio Super Regional.

Let's take a look at some of the bands who will be at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex this weekend.

VANDEGRIFT HIGH SCHOOL

The Viper Band is a consistent Bands of America Regional and Super Regional Finalist and has won Class Champion Awards in the 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A classes. The band was the Bands of America Austin Region Champion in 2016. The Viper Band has also been recognized as the 2014 4A UIL State Marching Champion and 2015 5A UIL State Marching Silver Medalist and was a finalist in the 2016 6A UIL State Marching Contest.

Vandegrift will be debuting its 2017 production entitled "Symphony of Silence." Musical selections will include four works by Beethoven -- "Symphony 9, Mvt. 4;" "Symphony 7, Mvt. 2;" "Symphony 5, Mvt. 1;" and "Moonlight Sonata" -- and "Sound of Silence" by Paul Simon.

CEDAR PARK HIGH SCHOOL

The Cedar Park High School Timberwolf Band is a multiple-time BOA Grand National Finalist and the current Texas UIL 5A State Marching Champion. The band has been awarded the Texas State Marching Championship three times in the school's 20-year history. The band is a consistent finalist at BOA Regionals and Super Regionals annually. In 2016, Cedar Park finished fifth at the BOA Grand National Championships.

For 2017, the Timberwolf band will be "The Steadfast Tin Soldier." Musical selections will include "Piano Concerto No. 2" by Dmitri Shostakovich, "Farandole" from Georges Bizet's "L'Arlesienne Suite," "Montagues & Capulets" from Sergei Prokofiev's "Romeo & Juliet," "Waltz of the Flowers" and "Trepak" from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," and "O moo babbion caro" from Giacomo Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi."

ROUND ROCK HIGH SCHOOL

The Dragon Band is a consistent Bands of America marching contest finalist in Austin and San Antonio since 2011. This is the the Dragon Band's third appearance at the Grand Nationals contest, placing seventh in 2015 and fourth in 2013 -- winning the music caption in semifinals.

The band also has performed in the Texas State Marching Contest finals, received the recipient of the Sudler Shield in 2014, and appeared in the Tournament of Roses parade in 2015. "Sensamaya" by Silvestre Revueltas will be the Dragon Band's show in 2017.
