Carmel HS: The 2016 BOA Grand National Champions
See how close the margin was and how much work it took for Carmel High School to win its third Bands of America Grand National Championship.
As the 2017 Bands of America season is approaching, we take a look back at the bands who made it all the way to the 2016 Grand National Finals.
The average size of a band at Bands of America Grand National Finals in Indianapolis in November was around 150 performers. For Carmel High School from Indiana, the numbers are staggering for how much work went into its show.
"Your training has got you to a point where this is going to be incredible tonight," said Carmel director Chris Kreke, before his team took the field at Lucas Oil Stadium. "That's because of six months of hard work that got you here."
The Carmel band members' six months of practice and preparation roughly translates into a collective time of 900 months, or 75 years, when you factor in the number of performers it took to perform the eight-minute show.
That's the kind of work that was needed for Carmel to add a third Grand National Championship to its mantel.
Heading into the finals at Grand Nationals, Carmel trailed its neighbors from Avon High School by 0.65 points overall with a score of 95.90. Then something happened that has never taken place at Grand Nationals. The first- and second-place bands finished tied with a score of 97.45.
The deciding factor for the national title was the General Effect caption, which Carmel won by edging out Avon by 0.3 points.
