'Not on the Vibes!' HS Football Player Hurdles Onto Percussion Instruments
Watch a football player break free for a long run that ends up with him being tackled be four sets of vibes on the sidelines.
As a former percussionist, I'm guilty of it. At some point in my playing days, I mistakenly set something on top of the vibes, marimba, xylophone, timpani, or another one of the instruments in the percussion family. Fortunately, I had some great instructors who quickly let me know, "Not on the vibes!"
But when you're getting ready to perform or warming up at a football game, the amount of flying objects that can come crashing through the ensemble is astounding. I've had water bottles, candy, footballs, bugs, and occasionally players flying in full-steam at my equipment. But thankfully, these projectiles always managed to stop or get held up by parents, players, or bystanders.
However, in the video below...the band equipment was not so lucky. In the Texas Class 5A Division II state quarterfinal in Arlington this past Friday, an Aledo High School running back made a great play to avoid tacklers at the line of scrimmage, weaved his way through Boswell High's linebackers, and broke free for a 61-yard run. When he was finally pushed out of bounds at the six-yard line, he landed right on top of four neatly organized sets of vibes!
Fortunately, no one was injured, and it looks like the vibes were OK. But it brings a whole new meaning to the age-old phrase every percussionist has heard -- "Not on the vibes!"
