Bluecoats, Crown, and SCV Capture Caption Awards
In football, they say that if you don't have a good offense, defense, and special teams you will not be able to win a championship.

In the marching arts, if you don't have a good brass, percussion, colorguard, visual, and GE (general effects), you may not be able to capture a championship. That is why the marching arts is truly the "Ultimate Team Sport".

At Drum Corps International World Championships, each corps is scored by a panel of judges responsible for rating the corps' performance based on the caption they are assigned to review. After the third night of competitions, each corps' individual caption scores are averaged for all three nights and individual caption awards are presented to those sections who score the highest.

The captions that are recognized for awards are Best General Effect (GE), Best Visual Performance, Best Colorguard, Best Brass, and Best Percussion.

SCV Snares

Donald Angelica Award for Best General Effect: Bluecoats

The Bluecoats were the only corps to eclipse 39 points every night. With an average score of 39.300 they were a full .5 points ahead of the Blue Devils. While the Bluecoats dipped slightly during semi's they bounced back during finals to post their highest score of the 3 nights (39.425). Do you the wink had anything to do with it? (see The Wink)

John Brazale Best Visual Performance Award: Carolina Crown

Carolina Crown is probably better known for their amazing hornline. However, don't forget what the Vis Staff at Crown is capable of doing. Crown's amazing horn riffs were accompanied by equally challenging body movements, choreography, and drill movements. All of which were being executed at a remarkably high level. Averaging a 19.500, Crown captured the award for best visual performance.

George Zingali Award for Best Color Guard: Carolina Crown

With an average score of 19.567, the Carolina Crown colorguard section took home another caption award. Displaying amazing technical skill, wonderfully interactive performances, and flat-out clean work, the Crown's guard won the Zingali Award.

Jim Ott Best Brass Performance Award: Carolina Crown

With only .034 points separating the Bluecoats and Carolina Crown. Crown's hornline was able to take the caption. After trailing following prelims, Carolina Crown surpassed the Bluecoats hornline during semi's.  Then Carolina had to put some separation between them and Bluecoats to get the average score high enough to win the award.

Fred Sanford Award for Best Percussion Performance: Santa Clara Vanguard

SCV's percussion won the title in 2014 and re-claimed the title again in 2016. The percussion section again used amazing arrangements from the Rennick team to push the boundaries of percussion ensemble performances. With an average of 19.225, they won 2 of the 3 nights and beat out the Bluecoats for the award for best percussion.
